Traveling with a dog in your family is not an obstacle for joint trips. By knowing the existing rules and requirements for transporting and relaxing with your four-legged friends, you won't have to ask relatives and friends to take care of your pet during your absence. You can confidently go on vacation with your dog.
A joint vacation and travel with a Toy Terrier, given the small size of the dog, brings fewer hassles and problems than with larger breeds. Of course, certain restrictions on the road and at the vacation spot cannot be avoided. However, by preparing in advance for possible obstacles, you will spare yourself and your Toy Terrier from worries and gain much more from the time spent with your beloved family pet.
How to Travel with a Dog
Before traveling, you should take care of your Toy Terrier's health:
- Is the climate of the area where you plan to spend your vacation suitable for your pet?
- Can the little dog handle the journey?
- What mode of transport is preferable for you and for him?
The answers to these questions will be provided by a veterinarian, whom you should visit in advance with your Toy Terrier. In addition to a full examination of the dog, the vet will administer the necessary vaccinations required at your destination.
Tip: Vaccination of the dog before the trip should be done more than three days in advance. After vaccination, your pet should have at least two days to "recover."
Consult with your veterinarian about which medications you need to take with you on the road. Trust the specialist in this matter, as they will select medications according to your pet's weight and condition.
Traveling with a dog will be enjoyable if you take the necessary documents and items with you:
- Dog passport, which includes vaccination records, a certificate of form No. 1 obtained a day before departure at the veterinary clinic, and a veterinary certificate (issued at the border by veterinary control);
- A first aid kit for your Toy;
- A leash and collar with a tag that includes your home address and contact phone number;
- Hygiene supplies for your pet (toothbrush, comb, ear and eye drops, nail clippers, etc.);
- Food and water bowl, food, and water;
- Personal items;
- Toys (one or two will suffice);
- Paper towels, napkins, a scoop, and bags for collecting feces.
With a small dog, there are no restrictions on the type of travel, as long as its health allows it to endure the journey or flight.
Your four-legged friend can travel comfortably by:
- Car. A personal vehicle is the most optimal option for traveling with a dog. At any moment, you can stop, walk your dog, and stretch your legs. You choose the time and place to stop without being tied to any factors.
- Train. A Toy Terrier can be conveniently transported by train in a pet carrier.
- Airplane. Again, the convenience of traveling with a Toy Terrier is that you won't have to part with it for even a minute. Small breeds are not placed in special animal boxes but are allowed to travel with you in the cabin in carry bags.
Rules for Transporting Animals
If your trip with a dog involves using any public transport, you will need to know the Rules for Transporting Animals.
While the rules for domestic transport in Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Belarus are not too strict, crossing the state border will require a complete set of documents for your Toy Terrier. In any case, you will need to ensure that all necessary vaccinations for dogs are up to date before traveling, particularly the rabies vaccination.
Vaccination details are recorded in the dog's veterinary passport. This document contains information about the animal and its owner, including: breed, name, gender, date of birth, type, and color of the coat. A photo of the Toy Terrier is affixed to the veterinary passport. Additionally, if the dog is microchipped, the chip number and installation date must be included. If the Toy has a tattoo, information about its existence, date of application, and tattoo number is mandatory.
But the most important information contained in the veterinary passport is the data on vaccinations and their validity periods. This also applies to deworming, flea and tick treatments, and rabies vaccinations.
The veterinary passport is filled out at the veterinary clinic where the vaccinations are administered. The document specifies the name of the vaccine and is certified with the veterinarian's signature and stamp.
Understanding how to fill out a veterinary passport for dogs in Ukraine and the CIS countries, you can also independently enter data about deworming, flea, and tick treatments. For this, you enter the name of the medication (you can stick a label from the medication) and the date of administration.
If you plan to travel with your Toy Terrier outside your country, you will need an international veterinary certificate.
You can obtain such a document in exchange for veterinary certificate No. 1, provided you have your international passport, tickets for the flight or train, and the microchip or other identification for your pet.
To transport your Toy Terrier, you will need a crate/container for transporting dogs. The small size of the dog makes it easier to transport the animal. Your dog will always be close to you.
How to Transport a Dog by Train
In Ukraine, the transportation of dogs by train is regulated by the Rules for the Transportation of Passengers, Baggage, Cargo Baggage, and Mail by Rail Transport of Ukraine (from 27.12.2006 No. 1196).
In the Russian Federation, the transportation of four-legged friends is determined by the Conditions for the Transportation of Domestic (Room) Animals, Dogs, and Birds.
In Kazakhstan, the Government Resolution of the Republic of Kazakhstan from 14.07.2011 No. 799 "On the Approval of the Rules for the Transportation of Passengers, Baggage, and Cargo by Rail Transport" is in effect.
In Belarus, the main document establishing the rules for transporting animals is the "Rules for the Transportation of Passengers, Baggage, and Cargo by Rail Transport" from 17.07.2015 No. 609.
Overall, traveling with a dog by train within the CIS countries is similar. This applies to the transportation of small dogs. Dogs like the Toy Terrier do not require travel in the baggage car and can comfortably be placed in pet carriers.
In suburban trains, there will be no problems transporting Toy Terriers at all. In open-plan, compartment, and SV cars of long-distance trains, the conditions for transportation depend on the class of service. The fee corresponds to the conditions. There are trains where you won't even have to pay for transporting an animal weighing up to 20 kg and with a height at the withers below 45 cm.
In international trains, transporting small dogs is only allowed in compartment cars.
Most importantly, don't forget what documents are needed for transporting a dog by train. In any train in any country, you will need veterinary documents:
- For traveling abroad – an international veterinary certificate (for CIS countries – a veterinary certificate);
- Within Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus – veterinary certificate form No. 1;
- Within the district, region (for suburban transport) – a veterinary certificate.
In any transport in any country, it is prohibited to transport:
- Sick animals;
- Small puppies under 56 days old, except when transported with their mother;
- Pregnant bitches during the last period of pregnancy.
Transporting Animals by Airplane
Transporting dogs by airplane has its own set of features that you should know when planning a flight with a dog. Before transporting a dog by airplane, you must obtain the airline's consent 2 days before departure. When booking seats, inform the dispatcher that you plan to transport a dog in the cabin.
To transport an animal in the cabin, its weight must not exceed 8 kg. This means the Toy Terrier will definitely be with you in the cabin, not in the cargo hold. Additionally, transporting animals in the cabin requires the small pet to be in a special carrier with dimensions not exceeding 1.15 m in length, width, and height.
Airline rules for transporting dogs require that the dog has an international veterinary passport with the necessary stamps and a document for transporting the animal by air. A Toy Terrier traveling by airplane must be vaccinated against rabies no earlier than one year before departure and no later than two months. A vaccination certificate obtained less than three days before travel is invalid. Keep this in mind.
Some airlines may require certificates from a kennel club stating that the Toy Terrier does not have breeding value.
In general, airline requirements can vary significantly. For example, some countries you may be traveling to require an official document guaranteeing that your Toy Terrier is not a carrier of ringworm (dermatomycosis).
If you plan to use Aeroflot's services, the transportation of animals by this company is limited to two animals per cabin.
Air France allows the transportation of 4 dogs in the cabin, provided each pet weighs no more than 5 kg.
Lufthansa places a primary focus on the dimensions of the carrier. The animal must be in a container sized 60x45x40 cm. Larger crates are placed in the cargo hold.
Dog in the Car
Dogs love to ride in cars. Therefore, a small Toy Terrier will not be a hindrance on a car trip. The only thing to consider is how to transport a dog in a car over long distances.
If your dog gets car sick, vomits, or drools excessively, you must have motion sickness and nausea tablets with you. According to many dog owners, Dramamine has proven effective for dog motion sickness.
In addition to medications, remember to stop the car every 4 hours to stretch your legs, take the dog to the bathroom, and get some water. This will reduce the likelihood of motion sickness and nausea.
Also, don't forget about the risk of heatstroke in dogs. Constantly ventilate the car. The fact is that Toy Terriers, like all dogs, regulate their temperature through their noses and paw pads. Toy Terriers have a hard time tolerating heat. The back seat, where dogs usually ride, is much hotter than the front. To prevent your pet from suffering from heat, plan trips in the morning or evening.
If you are traveling through different countries, you should know how to transport a dog across the border of Ukraine (CIS countries) by car. Specifically, what documents are needed to take a dog abroad by car.
So, as with other types of transport, crossing the border with a Toy Terrier by car requires you to have a sticker with the microchip number, a veterinary passport for the pet with a rabies vaccination record, a veterinary certificate form No. 1, and an international veterinary certificate (EU certificate).
Before departure, double-check the presence of veterinary control at the crossing point you plan to pass through.
Vacation at the Sea with a Dog
Traveling with a Toy Terrier is not limited to just a trip. Most often, pet owners take their furry friends to the sea. We approach this question in advance and very responsibly. It is essential to find out in advance where you can vacation with a dog at the sea. For this, you need to call or contact the resort, sanatorium, hotel, or camping site where you plan to stay.
Recently, vacationing with a dog at the sea has become quite common. Moreover, there are hotels that welcome pets.
The biggest danger that awaits a Toy Terrier at the sea is overheating. Try to visit the beach before noon and after 4 PM. This will reduce the risk of overheating for your pet.
Do not allow a hot dog to jump into cold water, as it may become ill from the temperature change. After water activities, be sure to dry the Toy Terrier with a towel to prevent it from catching a cold.
A Toy Terrier prone to ear diseases should not dive. Otherwise, it may develop otitis.
After the dog has bathed in the sea, rinse it with fresh running water. Dried salt can cause skin irritation.
Always bring plenty of water with you. Let your four-legged friend drink as much as possible to avoid heatstroke.
Hotels that Accept Dogs
For the first time, you may need to search online for hotels that accept pets. Although promotional brochures for good hotels always contain information about the possibility of staying with a dog. Trust me, it's worth the time spent. Because upon arrival at your vacation spot, you will be spared any explanations with the staff or searching for a new place to stay.
After you find the website of a hotel or guesthouse that accepts dogs, be sure to call the owners or the administrator. You need to confirm that the hotel welcomes guests with four-legged friends and that no other visitors will complain about the presence of an animal after your arrival.
Before booking a room at the hotel, ask for written confirmation that you will be accepted along with your dog.
Most hotels and inns do not allow dogs in dining areas and restaurants on their premises. Therefore, you should clarify where the little Toy will eat and whether it can be present in the dining area with you.
At first glance, there may seem to be many questions related to the upcoming trip with a Toy Terrier. But the emotions associated with spending time with your pet are far more important and valuable.
