When Do Toy Terriers Open Their Eyes

The first births and the appearance of puppies in a Toy Terrier are accompanied by many concerns for the owners. The development and well-being of the little dogs depend on how well the owner has prepared for the care and handling of the puppies.

In the presence of the owner, the puppy will go through all the main stages of development, starting from birth. The growth of the little one happens so quickly that in the first months, it will be necessary to keep track of all processes. One of the stages that requires monitoring is the period when the Toy Terrier puppies open their eyes.

General information about the eye-opening of newborn Toy Terriers.

A puppy enters this world with fully undeveloped eyelids, so the Toy Terrier, like other dog breeds, is born blind. The development of the eyelids continues after the puppies are born. The physiology of fully functioning eyelids plays a significant role in the healthy development of the dog, particularly for its orientation in the surrounding world. Eyelids prevent the visual organ from drying out, help protect the cornea from any irritating factors by producing tears. Tears for dogs, just like for humans, play an important cleansing role. For the eyelids to open and perform their functions, a certain period must pass, albeit a short one, during which the mother provides her baby with the necessary vitamins and proteins through her milk.

The opening of the eye slit in the puppies begins gradually, starting from the inner corner of the eye and ending at the outer one. This process does not happen in a day. Generally, the opening of the visual organ occurs simultaneously. However, it may happen that initially, the Toy Terrier opens one eye, and a couple of days later – the other. Do not be alarmed by the asynchronous opening.

Early eye-opening negatively affects the developing physiology of the Toy Terrier, as the eyelid may be underdeveloped.

When the Toy Terrier opens its eyes, you should prevent bright light from reaching the fragile visual organs. For several days, exclude bright lighting in the room. At first, the little one may not show any reaction to the light. This is because puppies do not distinguish between light and darkness. The ability to see, like adult dogs, is acquired by puppies a few days or weeks after their eyes open.

Newborn Toy Terrier puppies, as seen in the PHOTO, helplessly nudging their little faces against their mother's belly, evoke both affection and concern in owners about when Toy Terrier puppies open their eyes.

The average indicator for this important developmental process occurs in the second week after birth, approximately on the 11th to 15th day. The formation of the retina is completed around the third week of the puppy's life, and dogs can see clearly by the time they reach one month of age. These indicators are average, and they should only serve as a guideline.

For each individual of this decorative breed, the phase of complete eye-opening is unique; they may open earlier or later. The opened eyelids of the Toy Terrier have a bluish color, which will change over time to the color that the adult terrier will have.

When to consult a specialist

You should immediately take the Toy Terrier puppy to the veterinarian if, upon opening the eye slits, it is found that the puppy's eyes are:

  • white or bright blue.
  • swollen.

If the puppy's eyes have not opened by the 18th to 21st day, you should also seek consultation and assistance from a specialist. There can be several reasons for late opening or failure to open at all.

  • accumulation of dirt in the eye slit.
  • presence of microbes in it.
  • developing conjunctivitis.
  • inflammation of the cornea (keratitis).

Additionally, eyelids may open late or not at all in weak puppies. This happens when the litter is large. Although Toy Terriers typically have small litters, do not forget that the health of a Toy Terrier is not always great. Plus, pregnancy could have harmed the body, so even a small litter does not guarantee completely healthy puppies.

As soon as the veterinarian diagnoses a problem with the visual organ, begin treatment immediately. Systematically rinse the puppy's eye slits with a furacilin solution. If the little pet has conjunctivitis, antibiotic drops will be necessary. Furthermore, the puppy with conjunctivitis will need to be isolated from its siblings.

How to care for a Toy Terrier's eyes

You should rinse the visual organs five to six times a day. After three days, you will see that the problem has disappeared. If the eyelids do not open due to constant discharge, start wiping the puppy's eyes with a piece of gauze soaked either in a weakly infused chamomile solution or in warm boiled water. You can buy chamomile at the pharmacy and prepare the infusion yourself. Alternatively, you can purchase a ready-made lotion with chamomile or St. John's wort from a veterinary pharmacy. The cost of such preparations is minimal, while the effect is maximally beneficial. These herbs not only help with rinsing the visual organs but also alleviate the inflammatory process. And most importantly – they do no harm to the Toy Terrier.
